Puerto Rico’s animal overpopulation crisis cannot be solved through rescue alone. There will always be more animals needing help than shelters and rescue organizations can accommodate.
Spaying and neutering are the most effective ways to prevent unwanted litters, reduces abandonment and breaks the cycle before it begins.
At El Faro, we believe education and access to affordable spay/neuter services are essential to creating lasting change for Puerto Rico’s animals.

🐾 The Sato Project — Operation Sato
Offers free spay/neuter, vaccination and microchipping services, including mobile clinics in southeastern Puerto Rico and monthly veterinary vouchers. Their Spanish information page gives contacts for owned pets and TNR cases.
🐾 Luna Vet Help — San Juan
Nonprofit veterinary organization offering preventive care and sterilization programs. They also collaborate with other non-profits on free sterilization initiatives.
🐾 Humane Society of Puerto Rico — Guaynabo
Offers low-cost sterilization by appointment. Current published starting prices are $45 for cats, $60 for male dogs and $70 for female dogs, with possible additional charges depending on the animal.

Our Hurricane Maria Story:
Maria was a devastating experience for all. We were so fortunate to be able to remove our animals from the shelter and move them to the safety of our veterinarian’s clinic before the storm, but the devastation was enormous. The area where we house our dogs in the shelter was completely destroyed and we have been working at limited-capacity since. Even over a year later, we are still in the process of re-building and hurricane-proofing the shelter so that we can provide adequate shelter space for our dogs in the future. As of now, over half of our facility has been repaired; we have been able to move our dogs back and can house up to 50 (though previously our capacity was at 100.) To repair all of the damage and see our facility running like it was before Maria’s devastation, we will need to raise $400,000. This money would include the demolishing and rebuilding of our facility, a geotechnical study, structure design and furnishings.
